How grayscale conversion works

Turning a color photo into black and white is more than draining saturation. Most converters pick a formula that maps red, green, and blue into a single gray value.

Luminosity weighting

The human eye is more sensitive to green than to red or blue. A luminosity formula weights channels accordingly (roughly 30% red, 59% green, 11% blue). That is what this site uses by default, because portraits and everyday scenes usually keep more natural midtones.

Average RGB

Averaging the three channels is simple and fast, but it can flatten contrast. Skin tones and foliage may look duller than a luminosity mix.

Desaturation

Desaturation reduces chroma while keeping relative channel values. It can feel soft and cinematic, but it is not always the most accurate “print-style” grayscale.

Practical tip

After conversion, nudge contrast and brightness. A small contrast boost often restores depth that gets lost when color cues disappear.
