How to make a photo black and white on iPhone

Use iPhone Photos Mono, Silvertone, and Noir - or convert HEIC privately in the browser with Black and White Filter.

How to make a photo black and white on iPhone

iPhone does not label a button “black and white.” The looks live under filters with names like Mono, Silvertone, and Noir. Here is a clean path in Photos - and a private browser option when you want Rec. 709 grayscale without installing another app.

Method 1: Photos app filters

  1. Open the photo in Photos and tap Edit.
  2. Tap the three overlapping circles (Filters).
  3. Choose Mono (clean), Silvertone (softer), or Noir (higher contrast).
  4. Optionally open the adjustment sliders and refine Contrast, Brilliance, and Black Point.

For brighter portraits, Mono plus a lifted black point is often enough. For drama closer to street or ceremony energy, Noir is the closer match to our noir photo filter and high contrast landings.

Method 2: Portrait modes on newer iPhones

In Portrait capture, look for mono lighting styles such as Stage Light Mono or High-Key Light Mono when available. Those are capture-time looks; you can still re-edit later in Photos or export and convert again.

Method 3: Browser conversion for HEIC

Many iPhone originals are HEIC. Open the HEIC to black and white page (or the main tool) in Safari, upload from Files or the share sheet, adjust High Key / Balanced / Low Key, and download a PNG.

If a desktop browser cannot decode HEIC, export JPEG from Photos first, then convert. Processing stays on your device - see why private in-browser filters matter.
