Look for light edges
Side light and backlight carve form. Soft overhead light can leave a monochrome frame muddy.
Simplify the frame
Busy color scenes can become noisy in grayscale. Isolate a subject, reduce competing textures, and let negative space breathe.
Check the histogram mentally
Ask whether the brightest and darkest areas still create a clear path for the eye. If everything sits in the middle gray, the photo may feel lifeless.
