Black and white filter on Android

Convert photos to black and white on Android gallery apps and Google Photos - plus a private browser tool that works the same on every phone.

Black and white filter on Android

Android does not ship one universal black and white editor. Samsung, Pixel, Xiaomi, and others each expose different preset names. Google Photos is the common fallback.

Google Photos

  1. Open the image → Edit.
  2. Look under Filters or Tools for a mono / B&W preset.
  3. After applying, raise Contrast and check Shadows - stock presets are often flat.
  4. Save a copy if you want to keep the color original.

Manufacturer galleries

  • Pixel: Filters and tools vary by version; Mono-style looks are usually one tap, then refine contrast.
  • Samsung Gallery: Filter packs often include Classic or Dramatic mono - treat them as starting points.
  • Always compare against a luminosity conversion if the preset feels muddy.

Same result on every Android browser

Because OEM editors differ, a browser converter gives one Rec. 709 pipeline everywhere. Open the black and white filter, the grayscale photo filter, or style pages like high contrast and noir. Nothing uploads for processing.

For many frames from an event, use the batch converter.
